Description
Atopica for Dogs is a prescription oral solution used to treat allergic dermatitis—a common skin condition in dogs caused by an overactive immune response to environmental allergens. This condition often leads to intense itching, redness, inflammation, and scaly skin. Atopica works by targeting the underlying cause of the allergic reaction, helping to reduce symptoms and improve your dog’s comfort and quality of life. By relieving persistent itching and irritation, Atopica helps reduce the urge to scratch, rub, or lick excessively.
Medical Use:
Indicated for the control and long-term management of atopic dermatitis and associated symptoms in dogs.
Animals Treated:
Dogs 6 months of age or older, weighing at least 4 pounds.
Key Benefits:
- Clinically proven to reduce itching and skin inflammation
- Helps manage chronic allergic skin conditions without the need for steroids
- Fewer long-term side effects compared to corticosteroids
- Can be used safely over extended periods
- Improves quality of life by relieving discomfort and promoting skin healing
- Effective in most dogs with atopic or allergic dermatitis
How It Works:
Atopica contains cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive agent that selectively targets immune cells responsible for triggering allergic skin reactions. By modulating the immune response, it reduces inflammation and itching. Most dogs start with once-daily dosing, and many can transition to dosing every other day or even twice weekly for long-term control.
Ingredients
Active Ingredient:
Cyclosporine – an immunosuppressant used to treat chronic allergic conditions and autoimmune disorders in dogs, such as atopic dermatitis.
Directions

Dosage and Administration:
The initial dose of Atopica for Dogs is 5 mg/kg/day (3.3–6.7 mg/kg/day) as a single daily dose for 30 days. Following this initial daily treatment period, the dose may be tapered by decreasing the frequency to every other day or twice weekly, until a minimum frequency is reached that maintains the desired therapeutic effect.
Atopica should be given at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. If a dose is missed, administer the next dose (without doubling) as soon as possible, but never more than once daily.
Dosage Table:
| Dog Body Weight (lbs) | Dog Body Weight (kg) | Dose 5 mg/kg |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6.5 lbs | 2–2.9 kg | 10 mg capsule |
| 6.6–9 lbs | 3–3.9 kg | 2 × 10 mg capsule |
| 9.1–16 lbs | 4–7.9 kg | 25 mg capsule |
| 16.1–33 lbs | 8–14.9 kg | 50 mg capsule |
| 33.1–64 lbs | 15–28.9 kg | 100 mg capsule |
| 64.1–79 lbs | 29–35.9 kg | 100 mg capsule + 50 mg capsule |
| 79.1–121 lbs | 36–55.9 kg | 2 × 100 mg capsules |
Storage:
Atopica should be stored and dispensed in the original unit-dose container at controlled room temperature (59°–77°F / 15°–25°C). Keep away from children and pets.
Contraindications:
Atopica is contraindicated for use in dogs with a history of neoplasia. Do not use in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to cyclosporine.
Warnings:
Atopica (cyclosporine) is a systemic immunosuppressant and may increase the susceptibility to infections and the development of neoplasia.
Human Warnings:
Not for human use. Keep this and all medications out of reach of children.
Cautions:
There are many potential drug interactions. Inform your veterinarian of all medications your pet is currently taking. Administer Atopica at least one hour before or two hours after feeding.
Possible Side Effects:
If any serious side effects occur—such as difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or hives—stop administering Atopica and seek emergency veterinary care. Less serious side effects may include vomiting, soft stools or diarrhea, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, or changes in hair coat. Consult your veterinarian about any symptoms that appear unusual or persistent.
