Description

Antirobe is a brand name oral antibiotic prescribed for a range of bacterial infections in cats and dogs. Veterinarians use this powerful antibiotic to treat abscesses, infected wounds and dental infections caused by bacteria including Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp.

If your dog or cat has a serious infection in her mouth, soft tissue, skin, bone or near the bone, your pet's veterinarian may prescribe Antirobe. This powerful medication contains the antibiotic clindamycin, which is highly effective against a range of susceptible bacteria that cause infection including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and Clostridium perfringens. The medication works by penetrating the bacteria and halting the process that allows it to grow and reproduce. Antirobe is very effective against soft tissue infections and also useful for treating mouth infections including gingivitis and periodontitis. Antirobe is available in capsule or liquid formulation. Talk to your pet's veterinarian about possible side effects and dosing procedures.

How it works

Antirobe penetrates to the source of the bacterial infection. It inhibits bacteria by suppressing protein synthesis and growth.

Indications:

Antirobe (clindamycin hydrochloride) Capsules (dogs only) and Antirobe Aquadrops Liquid (dogs and cats) are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of designated microorganisms in the following conditions:

Dogs

  • Skin infections (wounds and abscesses) due to coagulase positive staphylococci (Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus intermedius). Deep wounds and abscesses due to Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens.
  • Dental infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens.
  • Osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens.

Cats

  • Skin infections (wounds and abscesses) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus spp. Deep wounds and abscesses due to Clostridium perfringens and Bacteroides fragilis.
  • Dental infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus spp., Clostridium perfringens and Bacteroides fragilis.

Dogs

Infected Wounds, Abscesses, and Dental Infections

Oral: 2.5-15.0 mg/lb body weight every 12 hours.

Duration: Treatment with Antirobe products may be continued up to a maximum of 28 days if clinical judgment indicates. Treatment of acute infections should not be continued for more than three or four days if no response to therapy is seen.

Dosage Schedule:

Capsules

  • Antirobe 25 mg, administer 1-6 capsules every 1 hours for each 10 pounds of body weight.
  • Antirobe 75 mg, administer 1-6 capsules for each 30 pounds of body weight.
  • Antirobe 150 mg, administer 1-6 capsules every 12 hours for each 60 pounds of body weight.

Oral Solution

  • Antirobe Aquadrops, administer 1-6 mL/10 lbs body weight every 12 hours.

Osteomyelitis

  • Oral: 5.0-15.0 mg/lb body weight every 12 hours
  • Duration: Treatment with Antirobe is recommended for a minimum of 28 days. Treatment should not be continued for longer than 28 days if no response to therapy is seen.

Dosage Schedule:

Capsules

  • Antirobe 25 mg, administer 2-6 capsules every 12 hours for each 10 pounds of body weight
  • Antirobe 75 mg, administer 2-6 capsules every 12 hours for each 30 pounds of body weight.
  • Antirobe 150 mg, administer 2-6 capsules every 12 hours for each 60 pounds of body weight.

Oral Solution

  • Antirobe Aquadrops, administer 2-6 mL/10 lbs body weight every 12 hours.

Cats

Infected Wounds, Abscesses, and Dental Infections

5.0-15.0 mg/lb body weight once every 24 hours depending on the severity of the condition.

Duration: Treatment with Antirobe Aquadrops oral solution may be continued up to a maximum of 14 days if clinical judgment indicates. Treatment of acute infections should not be continued for more than three to four days if no clinical response to therapy is seen.

Dosage Schedule:

Antirobe Aquadrops, to provide 5.0 mg/lb, administer 1 mL/5 lbs body weight once every 24 hours; to provide 15.0 mg/lb, administer 3 mL/5 lbs body weight once every 24 hours.

Contraindications

Antirobe Capsules and Antirobe Aquadrops oral solution are contraindicated in animals with a history of hypersensitivity to preparations containing clindamycin or lincomycin.

Because of potential adverse gastrointestinal effects, do not administer to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, chinchillas or ruminating animals.

Warnings

Keep out of reach of children. Not for human use.

Precautions

During prolonged therapy of one month or greater, periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should be performed.

The use of Antirobe occasionally results in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms such as clostridia and yeasts. Therefore, the administration of Antirobe should be avoided in those species sensitive to the gastrointestinal effects of clindamycin (see Contraindications). Should superinfections occur, appropriate measures should be taken as indicated by the clinical situation.

Patients with very severe renal disease and/or very severe hepatic disease accompanied by severe metabolic aberrations should be dosed with caution, and serum clindamycin levels monitored during high-dose therapy.

Clindamycin hydrochloride has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefor, Antirobe should be used with caution in animals receiving such agents.

Safety in gestating bitches and queens or breeding male dogs and cats has not been established.

Adverse Reactions

Cautions:

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. If the diarrhea is watery or has blood in it, call your veterinarian. Do not use any medication to stop the diarrhea unless your veterinarian has told you to do so.

Storage:

Store at controlled room temperature 20° to 25° C (68° to 77° F).

Antirobe is FDA-approved for use in dogs only; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use Antirobe in cats. Antirobe is a prescription medication available as 25 mg, 75 mg, and 150 mg capsules and 25 mg/ml drops as Antirobe Aquadrops. Symptoms may get better before the infection is fully treated. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. If the diarrhea is watery or has blood in it, call your veterinarian. Do not use any medication to stop the diarrhea unless your veterinarian has told you to do so.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has kidney disease, liver disease, colitis, asthma, eczema, or allergic skin reaction. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating. Prior to any surgery on your pet, let your veterinarian know if your pet is still taking Antirobe.
Give this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your veterinarian. Do not give in larger amounts, or give for longer than recommended by your veterinarian. Symptoms may get better before the infection is fully treated. Periodic blood testing will be necessary. Kidney and liver function may also need to be tested. The usual dose for dogs is 2.5-15 mg/lb every 12 hours, and should be discontinued if no response is seen within 3-4 days. For osteomyelitis in dogs, treatment should be continued for a minimum of 28 days. The usual dose in cats is 5-15 mg/lb every 24 hours for a maximum duration of 14 days. Discontinue if no response is seen within 3-4 days. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Allow plenty of water for your pet to drink.
If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Antirobe and seek emergency veterinary medical help: an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat). Stop the medication and talk to your veterinarian if any of these side effects occur: diarrhea that is watery or bloody, fever, chills, body aches, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, urinating less than usual or not at all, fever, headache, or blistering or peeling of the skin. Side effects other than those listed in this guide may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that is unusual or especially bothersome to your pet.
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and give the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
Seek emergency veterinary medical attention if you think you have given your pet too much of this medication. Symptoms of Antirobe overdose may include vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, depression, behavior changes, or seizure.
Avoid giving your pet other medications along with Antirobe unless your veterinarian has approved. Tell your veterinarian about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you give your pet including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
Do not use this medication if your pet is allergic to Antirobe or lincomycin (Bactramycin, L-Mycin, Lincocin). Do not give Antirobe together with erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, and others). There may be other drugs that can affect Antirobe.
