Description

Terramycin (Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate) is a broad-spectrum ophthalmic antibiotic ointment formulated to treat a wide range of eye infections in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses. This bright yellow ointment delivers potent antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including aerobic and anaerobic species, spirochetes, rickettsiae, and some larger viruses.

Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is a versatile antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, while Polymyxin B sulfate, derived from Bacillus polymyxa, is rapidly bactericidal against gram-negative organisms—especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa—and may offer additional antifungal benefits. Together, these ingredients offer additive or synergistic antibacterial effects.

This ophthalmic preparation is formulated in a special petrolatum base for optimal ocular absorption and ease of application. Each gram contains 5 mg of oxytetracycline HCl and 10,000 units of polymyxin B sulfate.

Key Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotic action with synergistic dual ingredients
  • Effective against both primary and secondary eye infections in pets
  • Treats conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal ulcers, and pink eye
  • Useful in managing Chlamydia-related eye infections in cats
  • Suitable for use in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and sheep

How It Works

Oxytetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, preventing growth and replication. Polymyxin B disrupts the bacterial cell membrane, causing rapid death of susceptible gram-negative bacteria. Their combined action maximizes effectiveness across a wide range of pathogens.

Indications

Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of superficial ocular infections caused by oxytetracycline- and polymyxin-sensitive organisms. Conditions include:

  • Conjunctivitis
  • Keratitis
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Blepharitis
  • Pink eye
  • Secondary bacterial complications of distemper in dogs
  • Bacterial eye inflammation due to other infectious diseases

Effective in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses.

  • Polymyxin B Sulfate: 10,000 units per gram of ointment

Warning:

Hypersensitivity Warning (Cats): Serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions have been reported in cats after using antibiotic ophthalmic medications. If your cat shows any of the following symptoms within 4 hours of application, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian immediately:

  • Facial swelling
  • Itching or scratching
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Difficulty breathing

Note:

The use of oxytetracycline or similar antibiotics can occasionally result in overgrowth of resistant organisms such as Monilia, staphylococci, or other bacteria and fungi. If signs of a new infection appear during treatment, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian for alternative therapy.

Storage Instructions:

Store Terramycin Ointment at controlled room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Permissible temperature excursions are 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep out of reach of children and pets.

FAQ

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is allergic to Polymyxin B, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, or doxycycline.
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is FDA-approved for veterinary use in dogs, cats, and horses. Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is available over-the-counter, except in California where it requires a prescription. Terramycin is available as a sterile eye ointment. The sterile ointment is usually applied as a thin film to the inside of the eyelid 2 to 4 times a day. Contact your veterinarian if your pet's symptoms begin to get worse or if you do not see any improvement to your pet's condition after a few days. Do not touch the tube opening to any surface, including eyes and hands. The tube opening is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.
Do not touch the tube opening to any surface including eyes or hands. This medication may cause blurred vision. Avoid using other eye medications unless approved by your veterinarian. Prolonged use of this medication may result in a more serious bacterial or fungal infection.

Serious side effects are not expected. Some stinging may occur. Fatal allergic reactions in cats may occur. Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room immediately if your cat has swelling of the face, itching, or appears to have difficulty breathing. Talk to your veterinarian about any other side effects that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

NOTE: The use of oxytetracycline and other antibiotics may result in an overgrowth of resistant organisms such as Monilia, staphylococci, and other species of bacteria. If new infections due to nonsensitive bacteria or fungi appear during therapy, appropriate measures should be taken.

Before using Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment, tell your veterinarian if your pet is using other eye medications. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

A must-have med, especially during COVID.
December 17, 2021
We recently adopted two little kittens -- brothers -- and within a week, one had caught the eyelid of the other in rough play. Access to veterinarians being almost nil right now, this little tube brought the swelling down almost immediately and his eye is now well on it's way to healing. Of course, this doesn't take the place of medical care, and I'm still going to take him in and have it looked at. But, this little tube made the days-wait for that possible. I'm back to order more, just in case.

I ordered this product after reading several reviews about its effectiveness. My cat had a litter of kittens whose eyes had become infected. I used it as it’s recommended (two to four times daily—I used it twice a day). Within two days, the redness was gone, and within five days there was no sign of infection. I highly recommend if you’re on a budget or social distancing.

Unable to get vetropolycin prescribed from my vet or anywhere on-line due to a recall of that product. Found this product online with no prescription required, cleared up my chow chows eye infection within four days. Great product.

This website had the cheapest price. The shipment was quick. My cat had conjunctivitis and teramycin helped her on day 2. I couldn’t see my cat suffering so you can imagine how happy I was to see my cat back to normal in 2 days. What I didn’t like about the ointment is that ones i squeeze the tube the ointment continuously was coming out and I couldn’t stop it. So I had to put extra ointment in a jar for a future use.

Merchant Response:Yelena, these Terramycin tubes can be finicky. We found slow and steady is best. Glad to have you an your cat as customers!
Pros
  • Cheap price. Works almost instantly
Cons
  • Problem with a tube.
