Description

Terramycin (Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Ointment) is an antibiotic, bright yellow in color, possessing potent antimicrobial activity. It is one of the most versatile of the broad-spectrum antibiotics, and is effective in the treatment of infections due to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic, spirochetes, rickettsiae, and certain of the larger viruses.

Polymyxin B sulfate is one of a group of related antibiotics derived from Bacillus polymyxa. The polymyxins are rapidly bactericidal, this action being exclusively against gram-negative bacteria.

The broad-spectrum effectiveness of Terramycin against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms is enhanced by the particular effectiveness of polymyxin B against infections associated with gram-negative organisms, especially those due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, where polymyxin B is the antibiotic of choice. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that polymyxin B sulfate possesses some antifungal activity. The combined antibacterial effect of Terramycin plus polymyxin is at least additive and, in many instances, an actual synergistic action is obtained.

Terramycin is an ointment of oxytetracycline hydrochloride and polymyxin B sulfate in a special petrolatum base. Each gram of ointment contains oxytetracycline HCl equivalent to 5 mg of oxytetracycline and 10,000 units of polymyxin B as the sulfate.

Key Benefits

  • Provides dual antibiotic activity to fight bacterial infections
  • Effective against a variety of primary and secondary eye infections in dogs and cats
  • Aids in the treatment of Chlamydia eye infections in cats

How It Works

One of its main ingredients, oxytetracycline, works by blocking the ability of bacteria to produce proteins which helps them to grow and multiply.

Indications

Terramycin is indicated for the prophylaxis and local treatment of superficial ocular infections due to oxytetracycline and polymyxin-sensitive organisms, including infections due to streptococci, rickettsiae, E. coli, and A.aerogenes, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, pink eye, corneal ulcer, blepharitis in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, and horses; ocular infections due to secondary bacterial complications of distemper in dogs, and bacterial inflammatory conditions which may occur secondary to other infectious diseases in the above species.

Directions

View Terramycin Drug Facts Sheet.

Terramycin (Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride and Polymyxin B Sulfate Ophthalmic Ointment) should be administered topically to the eye 2–4 times daily.

Caution:

Do not touch the tube opening to any surface including eyes or hands. This medication may cause blurred vision. Avoid using other eye medications unless approved by your veterinarian. Prolonged use of this medication may result in a serious bacterial or fungal infection.

Warning:

Serious, life threatening, hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in some cats following application of antibiotic ophthalmic preparations. If your cat has swelling of the face, itching, appears weak, vomits, or has difficulty breathing within 4 hours of application you should discontinue treatment and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Note:

The use of oxytetracycline and other antibiotics may resultin an overgrowth of resistant organisms such as Monilia, staphylococci, and other species of bacteria. If new infections due to nonsensitive bacteria or fungi appear during therapy, appropriate measures should be taken.

Storage:

Store at controlled room temperature between 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F), with excursions between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).

FAQ

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is allergic to Polymyxin B, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, or doxycycline.
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is FDA-approved for veterinary use in dogs, cats, and horses. Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment is available over-the-counter, except in California where it requires a prescription. Terramycin is available as a sterile eye ointment. The sterile ointment is usually applied as a thin film to the inside of the eyelid 2 to 4 times a day. Contact your veterinarian if your pet's symptoms begin to get worse or if you do not see any improvement to your pet's condition after a few days. Do not touch the tube opening to any surface, including eyes and hands. The tube opening is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.
Do not touch the tube opening to any surface including eyes or hands. This medication may cause blurred vision. Avoid using other eye medications unless approved by your veterinarian. Prolonged use of this medication may result in a more serious bacterial or fungal infection.

Serious side effects are not expected. Some stinging may occur. Fatal allergic reactions in cats may occur. Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room immediately if your cat has swelling of the face, itching, or appears to have difficulty breathing. Talk to your veterinarian about any other side effects that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

Before using Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment, tell your veterinarian if your pet is using other eye medications. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

A must-have med, especially during COVID.
December 17, 2021
We recently adopted two little kittens -- brothers -- and within a week, one had caught the eyelid of the other in rough play. Access to veterinarians being almost nil right now, this little tube brought the swelling down almost immediately and his eye is now well on it's way to healing. Of course, this doesn't take the place of medical care, and I'm still going to take him in and have it looked at. But, this little tube made the days-wait for that possible. I'm back to order more, just in case.

I ordered this product after reading several reviews about its effectiveness. My cat had a litter of kittens whose eyes had become infected. I used it as it’s recommended (two to four times daily—I used it twice a day). Within two days, the redness was gone, and within five days there was no sign of infection. I highly recommend if you’re on a budget or social distancing.

Terramycin works great for what it is intended to treat. Medicine cabinet not complete without it, especially if you have a lot of animals or foster often for rescues/shelters.

Unable to get vetropolycin prescribed from my vet or anywhere on-line due to a recall of that product. Found this product online with no prescription required, cleared up my chow chows eye infection within four days. Great product.

This website had the cheapest price. The shipment was quick. My cat had conjunctivitis and teramycin helped her on day 2. I couldn’t see my cat suffering so you can imagine how happy I was to see my cat back to normal in 2 days. What I didn’t like about the ointment is that ones i squeeze the tube the ointment continuously was coming out and I couldn’t stop it. So I had to put extra ointment in a jar for a future use.

Merchant Response:Yelena, these Terramycin tubes can be finicky. We found slow and steady is best. Glad to have you an your cat as customers!
Pros
  • Cheap price. Works almost instantly
Cons
  • Problem with a tube.
