Description

Cestex (epsiprantel) 12.5 mg is an oral medication used to treat tapeworm infections in dogs and cats.

How It Works

Epsiprantel, the active ingredient of Cestex, is an anthelminthic (dewormer). It paralyzes the tapeworm which causes it to lose its grip on your pet's intestinal wall. The tapeworm is then digested with no sign of the parasite seen in the stool after treatment.

Cestex tablets are indicated for the removal of the following:

Feline cestodes: Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis

Cestex tablets should be adminis-tered orally. The recommended dosage of epsiprantel is: cats, 1.25 mg/lb of body weight; dogs, 2.5 mg/lb of body weight. The following table may be used as a guide:

Fasting is not necessary or recommended.

Unless exposure to the infected intermediate hosts is controlled, reinfection is likely and retreatment may be required. In the case of D. caninum, an effective flea control program should be instituted.

Caution:

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Contraindications:

There are no known contraindications to the use of this drug.

Warnings:

For use in cats and dogs only. Safety of use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined. Keep out of reach of children. Not for use in humans.

Precaution:

Do not use in kittens or puppies less than 7 weeks of age.

Safety:

Epsiprantel has been evaluated in cats at 5 times the recom-mended dose given once daily for 3 days with no adverse effects noted. In tolerance studies, epsiprantel produced minimal clinical signs in cats given 40 times the recommended dose once daily for 4 days.

Epsiprantel has been evaluated in 14-day repeat dose studies in dogs at 500 mg/kg (90 times recommended dosage) with no significant adverse results. No side effects were observed during the clinical field studies.

Epsiprantel is not a cholinesterase inhibitor. During the course of clinical field studies, Cestex was administered concurrently with diethylcarbamazine citrate (dogs only), anti-inflammatory agents, insecticides, and nematocides with no drug incompatibilities noted.

Possible Side Effects

No side effects were observed during clinical field trials. In very rare instances, vomiting or diarrhea may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

Storage:

Store at controlled room temperature 20°-25°C (68°-77°F) with excursions between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).

FAQ

Cestex is a prescription medication FDA approved for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Cestex is available as tablets. The usual dose for dogs is 2.55 mg/lb of pet's body weight given as a single dose. The usual dose for cats is 1.25 mg/lb of pet's body weight given as a single dose. Fasting is not required nor is it recommended.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet is taking any other medications to treat worms. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.
Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Cestex should be given as a single dose. Cestex can be given with or without food. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Cestex at room temperature. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

Cestex is given as a single dose one time.
An overdose of this medication is unlikely. Your pet may experience vomiting if an extremely high dose is given. If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency veterinary medical treatment.
Do not give Cestex to kittens and puppies less than 7 weeks of age. Because humans can contract tapeworm from pets it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.
