FAQ

Yes, you can use APOQUEL for short periods. APOQUEL begins relieving allergic dog itch within 4 hours, and controls it within 24 hours.

Yes, APOQUEL may be used with other treatment such as:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, carprofen)
  • Vaccines (rabies)
  • Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops)

The use of APOQUEL has not been evaluated in combination with other systemic immunosuppressants, such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not placed any time restrictions on the use of APOQUEL. Your dog can continue to be treated with APOQUEL as long as your veterinarian recommends. In a study, dogs were treated with APOQUEL for more than 2 years.
Yes, APOQUEL can be given with or without food.
APOQUEL is given twice daily for up to 14 days, and then given once daily for maintenance therapy.
APOQUEL starts relieving allergic itch within 4 hours of giving the treatment to your dog.
The most common side effects of APOQUEL in a short-term clinical trial were vomiting and diarrhea. These occurred in only a small percentage of dogs treated with APOQUEL. These side effects typically stopped on their own.
APOQUEL is a medication for dogs prescribed by a veterinarian for dogs 12 months of age or older to control the itch and inflammation associated with allergic and atopic dermatitis.
Occasional itching is a fact of life for dogs. However, allergies, fleas, mites, infection, and other diseases may cause more frequent or constant itching, indicating a more serious condition. If you notice your dog is itching more often, and/or you see changes in your dog's skin, including hot spots, redness, or rash, make an appointment to visit your veterinarian and get it checked out.
If your dog is scratching, licking, or biting the same area repeatedly, the skin can become damaged, red, and sore. It's a good idea to ask your dog's veterinarian about the possible causes. It could be due to allergies, and in this event, your pet may require a prescription treatment such as APOQUEL to treat the underlying cause. There also may be a skin infection that requires antibiotic or antifungal treatment from your veterinarian.
APOQUEL is not a steroid, antihistamine, or cyclosporine (a type of drug that reduces immune system activity). APOQUEL is in a different category of medications. Unlike other medicines, APOQUEL blocks allergic itch at the source. So, it works at the underlying cause of itch to provide relief fast.

If your dog's itching persists or you notice any of the following signs, you should make an appointment to visit your veterinarian to find out if the itching is caused by a medical condition:

  • Frequent scratching, licking, biting, or chewing
  • Excessive rolling, rubbing, or scooting
  • Recurrent ear problems (head shaking, ear discharge/odor, or scratching at ears)
  • Hair loss, body odor, or skin changes (such as rash, redness, greasy skin, or scabs)

Our dog has allergies and last year at this time was having a horrible time with symptoms. The medication we were giving him stopped working. He was started on Apoquel and improved very quickly. We are grateful for his continued comfort and control of his symptoms.

My dog is allergic to just about anything except the air. If she doesn't have this medicine, she scratches herself until she has scabs. This is the only medicine so far that has stopped her itching, along with a fish and sweet potato dog food. Yes this is expensive, but it works! And Entirely Pets has the best price!

I also receive regular emails letting me know when my products are being filled and shipped. If there is a back order on a certain med, they let me know immediately. The customer service has been top notch.

Stops itching
July 10, 2022
My dog used to lick/chew the fur off a spot on his leg -- various places, I never knew why he picked a spot. I was just told he was "allergic." He takes one Apoquel per day. It is expensive, but he no longer has those chewing incidents.

It's a miracle DRUG!
May 7, 2022
My dog before the one I have now had to take steroids for his itching, and I think it killed him in the end. He was my best friend, and I would have given anything for a drug like Apoquel! The dog I have now also gets very itchy in the summertime and this drug works great and it won't kill her! I definitely recommend this medicine!
Merchant Response:David, your review is heavy. I'm reminded to take a moment and enjoy the companions in our lives. Bless you, and take care.
Doesn't kill your dog! Works well and fast! It is expensive!

Hate needing this but it does the trick!
April 6, 2022
our large breed pup needed this medicine after everything else failed. he has been taking it as needed for several years. there are times he doesn't need it for a while but then we will need to do some routine dosing when it's his worst time of the year. we do not do the recommended dosing of 1.5 pills twice a day and rarely every day unless a flare-up is happening which isn't often. Right now being a worse time of year for him we give him one tab mon-wed-fri and it works plenty well without having to give him so much medicine as was initially ordered for his weight. even his hot spots, left groin and armpit are not even flared up or noticeable at dosing this way. it works for him bc i don't like him being on it all the time and the cost is absolutely crazy. i have tried so many holistic treatments and topicals, and allergy pills with little effect. He loves to be outside and roll around and we can't keep him from his enjoyment. for reference our pup is around 90lbs.
only thing that works able to adjust dosing to a much lower dose than prescribed with very good effect EXPENSIVE Side effect worries with long-term doing which is why we adjusted the dosing to a minimal amount that works for him and use only as needed when possible.
