Description

Terbinafine Hydrochloride is prescribed for fungal infections, specifically of the nails, hair, and skin.

Uses

  • Can be used for both cats and dogs
  • Few side effects
  • Used to treat skin, hair and nails

How It Works

Terbinafine is a type of allylamine antifungal that prevents the biosynthesis of ergosterol, which is a crucial part of the fungal cell membrane, by inhibiting the squalene epoxidase enzyme. This causes death of the fungal cell by interfering with the buildup of high concentrations of squalene, but not caused by deficiency of ergosterol.

Indications

Terbinafine Hydrochloride Tablets are indicated for the treatment of onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail due to dermatophytes (tinea unguium).

Prior to initiating treatment, appropriate nail specimens for laboratory testing (KOH preparation, fungal culture, or nail biopsy) should be obtained to confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis

Directions

It is important to follow your Veterinarian's prescription instructions for your pet.

If vomiting experiences vomiting, give terbinafine with food. Giving with food can reduce the chance of vomiting and upset stomach.

Caution:

keep out of reach of children and pets

Contraindications:

Terbinafine Hydrochloride Tablets are contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to terbinafine or to any other ingredients of the formulation.

Warnings:

Rare cases of liver failure, some leading to death or liver transplant, have occurred with the use of Terbinafine Hydrochloride Tablets for the treatment of onychomycosis in individuals with and without pre-existing liver disease.

In the majority of liver cases reported in association with terbinafine hydrochloride use, the patients had serious underlying systemic conditions and an uncertain causal association with terbinafine hydrochloride. The severity of hepatic events and/or their outcome may be worse in patients with active or chronic liver disease. Treatment with Terbinafine Hydrochloride Tablets should be discontinued if biochemical or clinical evidence of liver injury develops.

There have been isolated reports of serious skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis). If progressive skin rash occurs, treatment with terbinafine hydrochloride should be discontinued.

Storage:

Store between 20°-25°C (68°-77°F) (See USP Controlled Room Temperature); in a tight container.
