Description

Pilocarpine is a prescription medication used to treat glaucoma and other, similar conditions of the eye. It works to reduce pressure by increasing the amount of fluid that is drained, helping to relieve uncomfortable symptoms. This safe and effective formula is a topical medication that's administered directly. Veterinarians may use this in the treatment of companion animals.

How It Works

Pilocarpine reduces pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid that can drain from the eye.

Indications

Pilocarpine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution is a muscarinic cholinergic agonist indicated for

  • The reduction of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
  • The management of acute angle-closure glaucoma
  • The prevention of postoperative elevated IOP associated with laser surgery
  • The induction of miosis

Ingredients

Active Ingredients:

Pilocarpine Hydrochloride 10 mg (1%).

Inactive Ingredients:

Hypromellose (2910) 5 mg (0.5%), Boric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Hydrochloric Acid and/or Sodium Hydroxide may be added to adjust pH (3.5 to 5.5) and Water for Injection.

Directions

Use pilocarpine ophthalmic exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand these directions, ask your veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you. Wash your hands before using the eye drops. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including the skin or eye. The dropper tip is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye. Do not use the eye drop that is discolored or has particles in it. Store pilocarpine ophthalmic at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle properly capped. Discard any unused medication on the expiration date.

  • Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution is a prescription miotic eye drop used in dogs to treat canine primary glaucoma.
  • Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution is not FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine; however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to prescribe this product for dogs.
  • Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution reduces pressure by increasing the amount of fluid that can drain from the eye.
  • Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution causes the pupil to become smaller reducing the eyes response to light or dark conditions.
  • Pilocarpine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution may also be used before or after surgery.

Tips: Wash your hands before using the eye drops. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including skin or eye. The dropper surface is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection of the eye.

Caution:

The dropper opening is sterile, so don't touch it to any surface, including eyes or hands. If it becomes contaminated, it may cause an infection in the eye.

Storage:

Store this product at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle properly capped.

Possible Side Effects

Call your vet if any of these occur: itching or hives, swelling, trouble breathing, fast, slow, or uneven heartbeat.

Precautions:

Pilocarpine is contraindicated in pets with a history of hypersensitivity to it or any component of the formulation. Avoid use in dogs with glaucoma secondary to uveitis or lens luxation, as the induction of miosis may lead to blockage of aqueous humor flow through the pupil, thus worsening glaucoma.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs, cats and horses.
