Description

Phenylbutazone helps to relieve swelling by blocking specific enzymes. It may be prescribed by your veterinarian to treat a variety of temporary inflammatory conditions, such as a pulled tendon, acute laminitis or joint problems. This form of Bute comes in a convenient oral tablet.

Key Benefits

  • Relieves pain and inflammation
  • Particularly good for osteoarthritis
  • Reduces fever
  • Inexpensive

How it works

Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which through its anti-inflammatory action can relieve pain, reduce inflammation and reduce fever.

Indications

For the relief of inflammatory conditions associated with the musculoskeletal system in horses.

Directions

  • Phenylbutazone for horses is a prescription medication.
  • Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation associated with fractures, arthritis, and painful injuries to the limbs and joints.

The oral dose for horses is 2 gm to 4 gm (2 to 4 tablets per 1,000 lbs. of body weight) every 24 hours or as directed by your veterinarian.

Cautions:

Do not give Phenylbutazone to pregnant or lactating mares. Do not give Phenylbutazone with other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or other ulcer-causing medications. Phenylbutazone should not be given to horses that are dehydrated or have stomach ulcers, anemia, bleeding disorders, or liver, kidney or heart disease.

Precautions:

Stop medication at the first sign of gastrointestinal upset, jaundice or blood dyscrasia. Authenticated cases of agranulocytosis associated with the drug have occurred in man; fatal reactions, although rare, have been reported in dogs after long-term therapy. To guard against this possibility, conduct routine blood counts at weekly intervals during the early phase of therapy and at intervals of two weeks thereafter. Any significant fall in the total white blood cell count, relative decrease in granulocytes, or black or tarry stools should be regarded as a signal for immediate cessation of therapy and institution of appropriate counter-measures.In the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with infections, specific anti-infective therapy is required.

Warning:

Not for use in horses intended for food.

Storage:

Store Phenylbutazone Tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Phenylbutazone injectable solution must be kept in the refrigerator at all times. To ensure proper temperature, Phenylbutazone injectable solution requires overnight shipping at an additional cost.
