Description
Ketoconazole is commonly used to treat systemic fungal infections and can also be used to reduce the doses and costs of cyclosporine treatment by interfering with cyclosporine drug metabolism. Treatment may be required for a longer period of time to get rid of the fungal infection. Ketoconazole may also reduce the synthesis of the male hormone testosterone. As a result, infertility may result from ketoconazole therapy in male dogs.
Key Benefits
- Treats various internal and external fungal infections
- Easy to administer
- Sold per tablet
How it works
Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication that blocks the formation of cortisol in the adrenal glands and for that reason is used in the treatment of Cushing's disease.
Indications
Ketoconazole tablets are not indicated for treatment of onychomycosis, cutaneous dermatophyteinfections, or Candida infections.
Ketoconazole tablets should be used only when other effective antifungal therapy is not available ortolerated and the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks.
Ketoconazole tablets are indicated for the treatment of the following systemic fungal infections inpatients who have failed or who are intolerant to other therapies: blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, chromomycosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis. Ketoconazole tablets should not be usedfor fungal meningitis because it penetrates poorly into the cerebrospinal fluid.
