Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution is a prescription medicine for veterinary use in dogs, cats, and horses. It is a sterile ophthalmic antibiotic used in the treatment of conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria. It can also be used to treat other bacterial infections of the eye.

How It Works

Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is bactericidal due to its binding in the bacteria interrupting protein synthesis.

Indications

Gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic solution is indicated in the topical treatment of ocular bacterial infectionsincluding conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, blepharitis,blepharoconjunctivitis, acute meibomianitis, and dacryocystitis, caused by susceptible strains of thefollowing microorganisms:

Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae,Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli; Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Neisseriagonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens.

• Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution is an antibiotic available by prescription used to treat bacterial infections of the eye in dogs, cats, and horses.
• Shake the bottle gently prior to use. Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution may cause blurred vision.
• Do not use Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution if your pet has a viral or fungal infection.

Tip: Wash your hands prior to applying the eye drops. Shake the bottle gently to be sure the medication is properly mixed. Do not touch the dropper opening to any surface including eyes and hands. The dropper opening is sterile and if it becomes contaminated it could cause an infection in the eye. Do not use any eye drops that are discolored or that have particles in them.

Caution:

Before using Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution, tell your veterinarian if your pet is using other eye drops or eye medications. If your pet has swelling of the face or itching, or appears to have difficulty breathing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not touch the dropper opening to any surface including eyes or hands.

Precautions

Prolonged use of topical antibiotics may give rise to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Bacterial resistance to gentamicin may also develop. If purulent discharge, inflammation or pain becomes aggravated, the patient should discontinue use of the medication and consult a physician. If irritation or hypersensitivity to any component of the drug develops, the patient should discontinue use of this preparation, and appropriate therapy should be instituted.

To avoid contamination, do not touch tip of container to the eye, eyelid, or any surface.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Keep out of the reach of children

Warnings:

Not for injection into the eye.

Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution should never be injected subconjunctivally, nor should it be directly introduced into the anterior chamber of the eye.

Side Effects:

Bacterial and fungal corneal ulcers have developed during treatment with gentamicin ophthalmic preparations. The most frequently reported adverse reactions are ocular burning and irritation upon drug instillation, non-specific conjunctivitis, conjunctival epithelial defects, and conjunctival hyperemia. Other adverse reactions which have occurred rarely are allergic reactions, thrombocytopenic purpura, and hallucinations.
