Description

GastroGard is the first and only medication approved by the FDA to treat Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome. GastroGard has been shown to safely and effectively treat existing stomach ulcers in horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older. It contains the active ingredient omeprazole which works to reduce stomach acid production at the source - the proton pump. With fewer active pumps, your horse's stomach produces sufficient acid to break down food, but not the excess acid that causes ulcers. By suppressing gastric acid production, GastroGard also helps prevent the recurrence of stomach ulcers.

Key Benefits

  • The only FDA approved product to treat equine gastric ulcers
  • Helps reduce stomach acid production that causes ulcers
  • Contains the active ingredient omeprazole
  • Safe for horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older
  • Provided as an oral paste

How It Works

GastroGard's active ingredient, omeprazole, is a gastric acid pump inhibitor that blocks the secretion of gastric acid regardless of the stimulus. By directly inhibiting these acid-producing pumps in the stomach lining, GastroGard creates an environment where existing ulcers can heal and the formation of new ulcers is less likely.

Indications

For treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastric ulcers in horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older.

Ingredients

Active Ingredient: Omeprazole

The active ingredient in GastroGard Oral Paste is omeprazole. Omeprazole is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Specifically, it blocks the enzyme system in the stomach lining that is responsible for the final step of acid production. By inhibiting this proton pump, omeprazole effectively decreases gastric acid secretion, which helps to heal existing ulcers and prevent the formation of new ones in horses and foals.

Dosage Regimen:

For the treatment of gastric ulcers in horses, administer Gastrogard Paste orally once daily for 4 weeks at the recommended dosage of 1.8 mg omeprazole per pound of body weight (4 mg/kg). To prevent the recurrence of gastric ulcers, continue treatment for at least an additional 4 weeks by administering Gastrogard Paste at the recommended daily maintenance dose of 0.9 mg omeprazole per pound of body weight (2 mg/kg).

Directions For Use:

  • Gastrogard Paste is recommended for use in horses and foals 4 weeks of age and older. One syringe will dose a 1250 lb (568 kg) horse at the treatment rate. For treatment, each weight marking on the syringe treats 250 lb (114 kg). For prevention, each marking doses 500 lb (227 kg).
  • For the treatment dose (1.8 mg/lb), set the syringe plunger to the horse's weight in pounds.
  • For the prevention dose (0.9 mg/lb), set the plunger to half the horse's weight in pounds.
  • To set the plunger: unlock the ring, slide it to the correct notch, and rotate to lock. Ensure the horse's mouth is empty. Remove the syringe tip cover and insert into the interdental space. Depress the plunger fully. Deposit the dose on the back of the tongue or deep into the cheek pouch. Ensure the horse consumes the complete dose. Observe briefly after dosing. Redosing is recommended if any is lost.
  • A partially used syringe can be recapped and reused until empty.

Caution:

Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Warning:

Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion, contact a physician. Physicians may contact a poison control center for advice concerning accidental ingestion.

Adverse Reactions:

No adverse reactions were observed in efficacy trials using the recommended treatment and prevention dosages.

Precautions:

The safety of Gastrogard Paste has not been determined in pregnant or lactating mares.

Safety Information:

  • Gastrogard Paste was well tolerated in controlled efficacy and safety studies.
  • No adverse reactions attributable to omeprazole were noted in field trials with 139 horses, including foals as young as one month.
  • A placebo-controlled study with adult horses at 5x the recommended dose for 90 days showed no treatment-related adverse effects.
  • A placebo-controlled tolerance study with adult horses at 10x the recommended dose for 21 days showed no treatment-related adverse effects.
  • A foal safety study at 1x, 3x, and 5x the recommended dose for 91 days showed elevated GGT levels at the highest dose, and a higher stomach to body weight ratio in the 3x and 5x groups, but no stomach abnormalities on examination.

Reproductive Safety:

A study with stallions at 3x the recommended dose for 70 days showed no adverse effects on semen quality or breeding behavior. A safety study in breeding mares has not been conducted.

Storage:

Store at 68°F - 77°F (20-25°C). Brief temperature excursions between 59°F - 86°F (15-30°C) are permitted.

FAQ

GastroGard requires a prescription from your veterinarian and should not be used in foals under 4 weeks of age. It is an oral paste that comes in an easy-to-use oral dosing syringe. One syringe is sufficient for a horse up to 1,250 lbs. GastroGard is available as an oral paste that is meant to be administered directly into the mouth. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the treatment of ulcers is 1.8 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the prevention of ulcers is 0.9 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. To deliver the correct dosage for the prevention of ulcers, set the syringe plunger to the weight marking corresponding to half of your horse's weight in lbs.
Tell your veterinarian if your horse has a hypersensitivity to omeprazole. Tell your veterinarian if your mare is pregnant, lactating or breeding.
Give GastroGard exactly as directed by your veterinarian. GastroGard must be administered by the mouth. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the treatment of ulcers is 1.8 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. Great staff and great price

I had a promo code that saved me money. All of the other sites had promo codes too but they ALL excluded this product from any promo code discount. Entirely Pets didn't! Saved me lots of money. I called customer service a few times with questions and they were great. If the hold line was too long I left my number and they always called back. Ever time! (And within 10 minutes or less). I'm definitely going to use them again. Excellent experience
