Description
EqStim is indicated in the horse as an adjunct to conventional therapy in the treatment of equine respiratory disease complex (ERDC). This product has been demonstrated to be effective in increasing the rate of recovery when used in conjunction with antibiotic or hyperimmune therapy in the treatment of primary and secondary bacterial and viral infections associated with equine respiratory disease complex. Provides the safest, most controlled CMI response available among licensed immunostimulants.
Key Benefits
- Consistent performance: Microbial resistance can be a problem with antibiotics, because these drugs typically have only one mode of action. EqStim stimulates a multi-faceted attack by the horse's own immune system.
- Flexible: EqStim's recommended treatment regimen (one intravenous injection every three days for three injections) is the optimal dosage schedule for complete immune stimulation. However, depending on an individual horse's response, EqStim's multi-dose therapy allows the veterinarian to customize the patient's care by amending the dose and number of treatments.
- Safe: EqStim does not employ any adjuvants (oil-based adjuvants have been implicated in adverse side effects when administered intravenously). EqStim is safe to use in adult horses, ponies, and foals. As with any equine biological, in rare instances EqStim may induce a mild, transient increase in body temperature, inappetance, and lethargy.
- Cost Effective: Because EqStim enhances the horse's first line of defense, the immune system, and shortens the recovery period from illness, there are substantial savings from the reduction in use of expensive antibiotics, lost training time, and missed performances.
How It Works
This product works to accelerate recovery from respiratory illnesses. It is proven to offer a faster recovery from viral or bacterial infections of the respiratory system.
Indications
EqStim is a preparation consisting of 0.4 mg/mL non-viable Propionibacterium acnes suspended in 12.5% ethanol in saline.
EqStim is indicated in the horse as an adjunct to conventional therapy in the treatment of equine respiratory disease complex. This product has been demonstrated to be effective in increasing the rate of recovery when used in conjunction with antibi-otic or hyperimmune therapy in the treatment of primary and secondary bacterial and viral infec-tions associated with equine respiratory disease complex.
Directions
EqStim must be administered by the intravenous (IV) route. Shake well to obtain uniform suspension.
- Foals - 1 mL
- Older horses - 1 mL per 250 lbs of body weight
Repeat dosage at day 3 (or day 4) and at day 7, and weekly thereafter as needed.
Caution:
Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
The effects of this immunostimulant have not been studied in pregnant animals. Do not use when pregnancy is known or suspected. There may be a rise in temperature, tremors, temporary loss of appetite, or sluggishness a few hours after injection.
Anaphylactoid reactions may occur.
Antidote: epinephrine.
For animal use only.
Keep out of reach of children.
Contraindications
Do not use in conjunction with glucocorticoids or other immune suppressors. Steroid therapy should be withdrawn at least seven days before initiating this immunostimulant therapy.
Storage:
May be stored at room temperature until first used. Once vial has been opened, store at 2°-7°C (35° - 45°F). Do not freeze.
Precautions:
Do not administer concomitantly with any type of steroid. Steroids can have a suppressing effect on the immune system, adversely affecting the capacity of EqStim to stimulate the appropriate immune response.
