Nutritional supplement for cats and dogs to help slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease
Great-tasting, easy-to-administer powder, just sprinkle over dry food or mix with a small amount of canned food
Epakitin's active ingredient, chitosan, is a natural polysaccharide derived from shells of shrimp and crab. This ingredient naturally binds phosphorus, which limits the absorption of phosphorus from the intestines and that limitation helps pets with chronic kidney disease by slowing down damage caused by the disease
Effective as a phosphate binder, decreasing serum phosphorus levels and has been shown to reduce urea and creatinine levels
Administration can be lifelong and there are no reported side effects

Good phosphate binder if you can find a way to feed it
August 1, 2025
It's less expensive to buy the 300g jar (still very pricey) but regardless you have to figure out the correct dose based on your pet's weight. Not enough guidance with the enclosed scoop. I measured and weighed powder and came up with 1 scoop = 9/16 tsp or 0.5625 tsp, the correct dose for 12.5 kg of body weight. From there do the math to determine the correct dose for pet. Then my dog hated the taste when I sprinkled it on chicken and refused to eat ANY chicken for a day. I finally found mixing the powder with enough unsweetened applesauce to make a heavy paste gets her to eat it.
Cons
- Tastes terrible so needs to be disguised (applesauce worked).
- Not enough guidance to correctly dose a pet based on its weight. My best determination is 1 enclosed scoop = 9/16 tsp. = 0.5625 g for each 12.5kg of pet.

I put this powder in the food and mix it. Sometimes I mix it with babyfood (chicken or turkey) because my dog enjoys Beechnut and Gerbers more than dog food. Sometimes he doesn't like the dog food but he always eats the babyfood with EPAKitin.

Entirely Pets has been easy and great to deal with. The EPAKITIN and Azodyl we order from them has helped our boy so much through his kidney disease.

Great Product!

My cat has been thriving on Epakiten twice a day for almost 2 years! I put one spoonful in an oral syringe and wet it down with some of his food juice. He has a normal BUN range now, but I still give to him twice a day.

Couldn't use for my cat
November 19, 2015
My cat has kidney disease and I was hopeful this would have the desired affect of binding the phosphorous in his food. Unfortunately, after a few servings he developed severe diarrhea and I had to stop using it. It may be a useful product for many cat owners, but my cat could not tolerate it. I can only give it one star due to my experience,
