Description

Doxepin is an orally administered, prescription medication that treats behavioral disorders in dogs and cats, including depression, noise phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It may also be prescribed for skin conditions caused by anxiety. In addition, Doxepin is a potent antihistamine.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects include low blood pressure, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, constipation, dry mouth, and blue-green urine. Doxepin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug, glaucoma or problems associated with urinary retention. Use with caution in seizure-prone animals.

Notify your veterinarian of other medications that your pet is taking. Drug interactions occur with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, thyroid medications, atropine sedatives, antihistamines, norepinephrine and phenytoin. The following drugs may increase the effects of doxepin: cimetidine (Tagamet) estrogens fluoxetine (Prozac) some sedatives enalapril verapamil and ranitidine (Zantac).

Caution:

Use of Doxepin has resulted in some side effects. Side effects include: excitability, GI upset or tiredness. If you notice any of these side effects stop use, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Using flea/tick collars while giving Doxepin can result in toxicity and possibly death. Make sure you discuss all possible side effects that could be caused by other medications your pet is taking with your veterinarian.

Storage

Store at temperatures between 68° - 77°F.

Doxepin HCl Capsules is given by mouth. Duration of treatment depends on the reason for and response to treatment. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. Doxepin HCl Capsules will not cure allergies but can help reduce the symptoms. The effects will disappear if the medication is discontinued. Results may not be immediate and it can take several weeks to see improvement.
While Doxepin has a lower risk for adverse cardiac effects than several other tricyclic medications, some cases of ventricular arrhythmias have occurred, especially following an overdose. It can also lead to lethargy, gastrointestinal distress, or excitability. Other adverse reactions may occur. Notify your veterinarian if your pet exhibits any unusual behavior or side effects after Doxepin treatment.
