Clemastine is an antihistamine for dogs and cats that is very effective in treating allergy symptoms, including itchy skin (pruritus) and skin inflammation of Atopic Dermatitis. Similar to and often more effective than other antihistamines, Clemastine acts by blocking the H1 receptor on tissues and suppresses inflammatory reactions caused by histamine.

How It Works

Clemastine is a selective histamine H1 antagonist. It binds to the histamine H1 receptor, and blocks histamine, allowing for temporary relief of allergy symptoms.

Indications

Clemastine Fumarate Tablets, USP, 2.68 mg are indicated for the relief of symptoms associated withallergic rhinitis such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, pruritus, and lacrimation. Clemastine Fumarate Tablets,USP, 2.68 mg are also indicated for the relief of mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations ofurticaria and angioedema.

It should be noted that clemastine fumarate is indicated for the dermatologic indications at the 2.68 mgdosage level only.

Dogs/Puppies of all weights: 1/2 - 1 tablet every 12 hours

Cats/Kittens of all weights: 1/2 tablet every 12 hours

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of Clemastine vary with cats and dogs.

In dogs it's most commonly sedation, hyperactivity, and dry mouth.

In cats, diarrhea is most common.

The side effects of clemastine in dogs are sedation, paradoxical hyperactivity, and dryness of the mouth.

Precautions

Clemastine fumarate should be used with caution in those with a history of bronchial asthma, increased pressure caused by fluid inside eye, hyperthyroidism, heart disease and high blood pressure.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

Cautions:

Use with caution when given with sedatives or tranquilizers.

Use with caution in animals with prostate or bladder conditions, sever cardiac failure or glaucoma.

Use with caution when given to pregnant or nursing animals.

Do not use in animals that are allergic to it.
