Description

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is a third generation cephalosporin and is used primarily to treat skin infections in dogs- most of which are caused by Staphylococcus. It has been very useful in dogs that have bacterial skin infections that are resistant to other antibiotics. It is used once daily which makes it very convenient to administer. It is usually very well tolerated and has few side effects. I really think this is a good antibiotic for Staphylococcus infections, and most veterinarians seem to be familiar with the drug and its indications.

Cefpodoxime proxetil is available by prescription only. Cefpodoxime proxetil is a cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily to fight skin infections in dogs. Cefpodoxime proxetil is effective against bacterial strains such as staphylococci, streptococci, escherichia, pasteurella, and proteus. Cefpodoxime proxetil inhibits the growth of the bacterial cell wall, causing the wall to become unstable and rupture.

Key Benefits

  • Treats bacterial skin, bladder and respiratory infections in dogs
  • Treats skin & soft tissue infections in cats
  • Simple oral once-daily dosing
  • Can be given with or without food
  • Comes in a film-coated tablet for easy administration

How it works

Cefpodoxime proxetil is used to treat skin infections in dogs susceptible to certain bacteria strains as well as bladder and respiratory infections. It is also used to treat skin and soft tissue infections in cats. It is a cephalosporin antibiotic that treats bacterial infections by suppressing the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoa.

Cefpodoxime Proxetil Tablets are indicated for the treatment of skin infections (wounds and abscesses) in dogs caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus canis (group G, ? hemolytic), Escherichia coli, Pasteurella multocida, and Proteus mirabilis.

FAQ

Cefpodoxime proxetil treats a range of infections, including those of the skin, bladder and respiratory system. Cefpodoxime proxetil requires a prescription from a veterinarian. The safety of cefpodoxime proxetil in dogs used for breeding, pregnant dogs, or lactating bitches has not been demonstrated. Safety for cats that are breeding, pregnant, or lactating also has not been demonstrated due to a lack of adequate studies. It may be used, however, if the prescribing veterinarian feels that the benefits outweigh the risks involved. As with other cephalosporins, cefpodoxime proxetil may occasionally induce a positive direct Coombs' test. Keep this and all drugs out of reach of children. Antimicrobial drugs, including penicillin and cephalosporins, can cause allergic reactions in sensitized individuals. To minimize the possibility of allergic reactions, those handling such antimicrobials, including cefpodoxime, are advised to avoid direct contact of the product with the skin and mucous membranes.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet is on aminoglycosides (gentamicin or neomycin), blood thinners, or probenicid.

This product works for my dogs
October 26, 2020
I enjoy and prefer using this medication because it works on my dog's reoccurring foot skin infection, whereas amoxicilin and cephalexin do not.
Pros
  • This is stronger than cephalexin and amoxicilin
Cons
  • This medication does not necessarily eliminate an infection 100% and forever. This product should be mixed with something like chlorhexidine wipes.

To the rescue - cuts, cough, and more
March 28, 2020
I rescue cats and I'm part of the TNVR program. Too many people either leave their animals when they leave, don't fix them, or drop them off. I've rescued many that are not only mild mannered, but have already been fixed. Yet they're emaciated and sometimes pretty battered. Some cats that I've got either got cut trying to get out of somewhere (or maybe had a bad parent), or got into some pretty bad fights with who knows what. Sometimes these cuts are oozing and smell. Sometimes they have such a bad cough you'd think they have pneumonia. As long as the cat is easy to handle and hasn't become too feral, this is a great medication to get rid of quite a few problems. And once this medication has started working, it really kicks in. You still have to wait for cuts to heal, but at least they're not oozing nastiness anymore. Because it is in pill form, it can be stored for quite a bit longer than an aqueous medication before it goes bad. So if you need it later, it will be there.
