Description

Calcitriol is a prescription medication commonly used in the treatment of conditions caused by high or low parathyroid levels. It works by maintaining blood calcium levels by promoting the absorption and use of calcium in the body. If your pet has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, parathyroid disorder, or an associated disease, your veterinarian may prescribe a medication such as calcitriol. Consult with your pet's veterinarian before administering this medication and follow their specific recommendations for use.

Key Benefits:

  • regulates calcium levels in the blood.
  • promotes calcium absorption from the intestinal tract.
  • this medication may be used to treat calcium deficiency associated with hypoparathyroidism.
  • It has also been prescribed to reduce parathyroid hormone concentrations in dogs with chronic kidney disease.
  • for Dogs and Cats

Possible Side Effects:

If your pet receives too much medication, the calcium levels in your pet's blood may get too high. If this occurs, your pet will exhibit the following symptoms: excessive urination, excessive thirst and diminished appetite. If this occurs, contact your veterinarian. If your pet's calcium levels are too low, your pet may develop muscle tremors, twitching, weakness, stiff movement, trouble coordinating muscle activity, changes in behavior, or seizures. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any of these side effects.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Tell your veterinarian about any other medications or supplements you are giving your pet. It's not uncommon for your veterinarian to prescribe two different medications, which may cause a drug interaction to occur. If this happens, your veterinarian may change the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely.
