Directions
Ampicillin for Injectable Suspension is a prescription antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections in dogs, cats, cattle, and calves. This versatile veterinary medication should be dosed based on species, body weight, and infection severity.
Dosage Instructions
- Dogs and Cats: Administer 3 mg per pound of body weight twice daily via subcutaneous (SC) or intramuscular (IM) injection.
- Cattle and Calves (including non-ruminating veal calves): Administer 2–5 mg per pound of body weight once daily via intramuscular injection. Do not treat for more than 7 consecutive days.
In all species, a 3-day treatment course is typically effective. Continue treatment for 48 to 72 hours after the animal becomes afebrile or shows no clinical symptoms.
Preparation & Administration
- Reconstitute the multi-dose dry-filled vial using Sterile Water for Injection, USP, following label directions.
- Shake well after reconstitution to ensure even suspension.
- Reconstituted solution is stable for up to 3 months under refrigeration and should appear white to pale yellow.
- Clearly date and label the vial with concentration upon reconstitution.
Caution
Federal law restricts the use of this drug to licensed veterinarians or those acting under their supervision.
Contraindications
Do not use in animals with a known hypersensitivity to penicillin, cephalosporins, or related antibiotics.
Residue Warnings
- Do not treat cattle for more than 7 days.
- Milk from treated cows must not be used for human consumption during treatment or within 48 hours (4 milkings) after the last dose.
- Do not slaughter treated cattle for food during treatment or within 144 hours (6 days) after the final dose.
Precautions
As a derivative of 6-aminopenicillanic acid, ampicillin may cause allergic reactions. If symptoms occur, discontinue treatment and administer appropriate agents (e.g., antihistamines, corticosteroids, or pressor amines) as directed by a veterinarian.
Storage Instructions
- Store unreconstituted vials at or below 25°C (77°F), with excursions permitted up to 30°C (86°F).
