Description

Terbutaline is a generic prescription and is used to treat shortness of breath, wheezing and other symptoms cause by asthma, collapsing trachea, chronic allergic bronchitis and other diseases of the lung. It works by relaxing muscles in the airway to make breathing easier and less stressful.

Key Benefits

  • Effective for dogs and cats with asthma, allergic bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, and some lung diseases
  • Eases breathing
  • Small tablet form for easy dosing

How It Works

Terbutaline is a bronchodilator that stimulates certain receptors in the airway to dilate or open, making it easier for your pet to breathe. It primarily works to stimulate the airway's beta-2 receptors, allowing for those muscles to relax.

Indications

Terbutaline sulfate is indicated for the prevention and reversal of bronchospasm with asthma and reversible bronchospasm associated with bronchitis and emphysema.

Directions

Use as directed by your veterinarian.

Precautions:

Not for use in pets allergic to Terbutaline. Use with caution in pets with diabetes, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), high blood pressure, a history of seizures or low levels of potassium in the blood. Use with extreme caution in animals with heart disease. Do not use Terbutaline if your pet is having difficulty breathing, since the effects of the medication takes several hours to have an effect. In this case, seek emergency care immediately.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.

Possible Side Effects

Please contact your vet immediately if you notice any of the following reactions: increased heart rate, tremors, nervousness and dizziness. These effects usually disappear after a short time. However, if these are severe, persistent or if your pet's condition worsens, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Storage:

Store in well-closed containers at room temperatures 68° - 77°F.
