Description

Sucralfate is a prescription medication used in dogs, cats, and horses to treat ulcers. Although Sucralfate is not FDA-approved for use in veterinary medicine, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for dogs, cats, and horses.

How It Works

Sucralfate works to prevent and treat ulcers that form in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and intestines. Sucralfate works with the acids in the stomach to form a paste over the ulcers and prevent further damage.

Indications

Sucralfate tablets, USP are indicated in:

  • Short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of active duodenal ulcer. While healing with sucralfate mayoccur during the first week or two, treatment should be continued for 4 to 8 weeks unless healinghas been demonstrated by x-ray or endoscopic examination.
  • Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer patients at reduced dosage after healing of acute ulcers.

Directions

Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Sucralfate should be given on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after, a meal. Unless directed otherwise, crush the tablet for better absorption. Store sucralfate at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

  • Dogs and Puppies: 1/2 - 1 tablet (0.5 - 1 gram) every 8-12 hours orally
  • Cats and Kittens: 1/4 - 1/2 tablet (0.25 - 0.5 gram) every 8-12 hours orally
  • Horses: 4.5 mg to 9 mg/lb every 6-8 hours
  • Foals: 1 tablet (1 gram) every 8 hours orally

Use with caution in pregnant or nursing animals.
