Description

Sotalol is a beta blocker for ventricular tachycardia used to treat certain types of heart arrhythmia. Rapid heart rates may lead to arrhythmia causing the heart to pump inefficiently. If the heart isn't pumping blood properly, oxygenated blood may not be able to reach different areas of the body. Sotalol is a drug used to treat rapid heart rates in dogs and cats.

Directions

  • It is important to follow your Veterinarian's prescription instructions for your pet.
  • Try to give this medication at about the same times each day.
  • Give your pet this medication on an empty stomach.
  • DO NOT give your pet more medicine than directed.
  • DO NOT give your pet medicine more often than prescribed.
  • Try not to miss giving any doses since abruptly stopping adminstration will be harmful to your pet.[unless directed by your veterinarian.]
  • Plan ahead to ensure you have the refills you need.

Possible Side Effects:

The following side effects have been reported and usually occur in older pets: slow heart rate, drowsiness, worsening heart failure, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing bronchospasm, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Contact your veterinarian if your pet is very tired, has trouble exercising, begins wheezing, develops shortness of breath or a cough, or if your pet's attitude or behavior changes.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Possible Drug Interactions?

Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications or supplements you are giving your pet. It's not uncommon for your veterinarian to prescribe two different medications, which may cause a drug interaction to occur. If this happens, your veterinarian may change the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. Sotalol may interact with the following medicines: sympathomimetics, anesthetic agents, phenothiazines, furosemide, hydralazine, insulin, and calcium channel blockers. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Store this medicine at room temperature in a dry, cool place.

Keep this medicine away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in damp places, in the bathroom, or near the kitchen sink. This medication can break down when exposed to moisture or heat.
