What You Should Know About Respiratory Medication for Dogs

If your pet is experiencing shortness of breath or labored and difficulty breathing, he may be suffering from dyspnea. When a dog is suffering from this condition, he is not able to get enough oxygen into his lunges or to his tissues. If caught quick, troubled breathing is treatable, but if it goes unnoticed, troubled breathing can quickly become a life-threatening ordeal.

Any dog, no matter his age breed or size is susceptible to breathing problems. If your dog has been to the kennel recently, it is possible he is suffering from Infectious tracheobronchitis or (kennel cough). This is common in dogs, especially those who are younger.

Fortunately, there are plenty of excellent options to treat your dog who struggles from difficult breathing. Check out the options below for your pet!

Theophylline ER

Theophylline is a popular bronchodilator prescribed by veterinarians that can be applied to both both dogs and cats. Theophylline works by relaxing the muscles in the lung, thereby opening up air passages that may have previously been previously restricted. Theophylline is primarily used for the treatment of heart failure, asthma, bronchitis, and pulmonary edema in dogs and cats, and is best taken on an empty stomach.

Terbutaline

Terbutaline Sulfate is prescribed by veterinarians for dogs and cats to help relax lung air passages and ease regular breathing. Prescribed by veterinarians primarily for the treatment of bronchial diseases-asthma, tracheobronchitis, collapsing trachea, allergic bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions.

Veraflox Oral Suspension

Veraflox (Pradofloxacin) is an oral suspension commonly prescribed to cats who suffer from upper respiratory tract infections, wound infections and abscesses. Veraflox is delivered to cats via a special oral suspension that allows it to pass the cat’s taste buds undetected. This mechanism of delivery contains an agent that binds to the antibiotic, and allows it to pass the cat’s taste buds undetected, ensuring palatability and compliance from cats. Veraflox comes with a mess-free syringe with both fine dosing measurements.

Ventipulmin® Syrup

Ventipulmin is prescribed to horses who suffer from restrictive airways caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), also known as Heaves. Ventipulmin syrup contains the active ingredient clenbuterol hydrochloride, a bronchodilator that also reduces mucus thickness to improve breathing.
