Description

Misoprostol is used for the treatment and prevention of stomach ulcers in dogs. It is used to treat stomach ulcers, especially those due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and some prescription arthritis medications.

Key Benefits

  • Prescription medication for the treatment and prevention of stomach ulcers
  • Misoprostol treats stomach ulcers by decreasing stomach acid formation
  • Provides treatment for stomach ulcers commonly associated with NSAID use

Misoprostol is a prescription medication for the treatment and prevention of stomach ulcers. It is used to treat stomach ulcers, especially those due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and some prescription arthritis medications (see patient info sheet for examples). Misoprostol is also used to decrease the toxic effects to the kidney resulting from the use of cyclosporine.

How it works

Misoprostol treats and prevents gastric (stomach) ulcers by protecting the stomach lining and decreasing stomach acid formation. Misoprostol is a synthetic form of a prostaglandin.

Indications and Usage

Misoprostol is indicated for reducing the risk of NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin)–induced gastric ulcers in patients at high risk of complications from gastric ulcer,e.g., the elderly and patients with concomitant debilitating disease, as well as patients at high risk ofdeveloping gastric ulceration, such as patients with a history of ulcer. Misoprostol has not been shownto reduce the risk of duodenal ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs. Misoprostol should be taken for theduration of NSAID therapy. Misoprostol has been shown to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers incontrolled studies of 3 months' duration. It had no effect, compared to placebo, on gastrointestinal painor discomfort associated with NSAID use.

Adverse effects are often transient and resolve over several days or may be minimized by dosage adjustment or giving doses with food. Potentially, uterine contractions and vaginal bleeding could occur in females. Misoprostol should not be used in pregnant animals, due to the potential for causing abortion. Give with food. Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal/stomach pain, vomiting, and flatulence (gas). These may only last a few days, but if any of these are severe, get worse or continue to be a problem, contact your veterinarian.
