Midamox is a topical solution for dogs that contains two active ingredients, imidacloprid and moxidectin. It is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of various external and internal parasites in dogs.
Imidacloprid is an insecticide that targets and kills fleas by disrupting their nervous system. It can also provide some level of control against lice and ticks. Moxidectin is an anthelmintic and macrocyclic lactone that is effective against various internal parasites, including heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
Combined, these two active ingredients provide comprehensive protection against a range of parasites. Midamox is typically administered topically, usually as a spot-on treatment applied directly onto the dog's skin. The solution is usually applied between the shoulder blades or at the base of the neck.
As with any medication, it is important to follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian or on the product label. The dosage and frequency of application may vary depending on the size, weight, and specific needs of your dog. It is always recommended to consult with a veterinarian before using any new medication on your pet.
Midamox (imidacloprid + moxidectin) topical solution is indicated for the prevention and treatment of flea infestations in dogs. It is also used for controlling and treating tick infestations and for preventing heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis in dogs. Midamox is effective against adult fleas, flea larvae, tick larvae, ticks, and prevents the development of heartworm larvae. It is suitable for use in dogs over 7 weeks of age and weighing over 3 pounds.
Midamox works by combining the active ingredients imidacloprid and moxidectin. Imidacloprid is an insecticide that targets the nervous system of fleas and ticks, paralyzing their muscles and leading to their death. It kills adult fleas and flea larvae present on the dog's skin and in the environment such as carpets, bedding, and upholstery.
Moxidectin is an anthelmintic drug that prevents heartworm disease by killing the immature stage of the heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) that are transmitted to dogs through mosquito bites. It also targets other internal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms.
When applied as directed, Midamox is absorbed into the dog's bloodstream and provides sustained protection against fleas, ticks and heartworms for up to 30 days. It is also water-resistant, and therefore remains effective after the dog has been bathed or exposed to water.
The recommended minimum dose is 4.5 mg/lb (10.0 mg/kg) imidacloprid ad 0.45 mg/lb (1.0 mg/kg) moxidectin, once a month, by topical administration.
Do not apply to irritated skin.

Shampooing 90 minutes after treatment does not reduce the effectiveness of Midamox for Dogs in the prevention of heartworm disease. However, shampooing as often as once weekly may reduce the effectiveness of the product against fleas.
Heartworm Prevention: For prevention of heartworm disease, Midamox for Dogs should be administered at one-month intervals. Midamox for Dogs may be administered year-round or at a minimum should start one month before the first expected exposure to mosquitoes and should continue at monthly intervals until one month after the last exposure to mosquitoes. If a dose is missed and a 30-day interval between doses is exceeded, administer Midamox for Dogs immediately and resume the monthly dosing schedule. When replacing another heartworm preventative product in a heartworm prevention program, the first treatment with Midamox for Dogs should be given within one month of the last dose of the former medication.
Flea Treatment: For the treatment of flea infestations, Midamox for Dogs should be administered at one-month intervals. If the dog is already infested with fleas when the first dose of Midamox for Dogs is administered, adult fleas on the dog will be killed. However, re-infestation from the emergence of preexisting pupae in the environment may continue to occur for six weeks or longer after treatment is initiated. Dogs treated with imidacloprid, including those with pre-existing flea allergy dermatitis have shown clinical improvement as a direct result of elimination of fleas from the dog.
Treatment of Circulating Microfilaria: For the treatment of circulating D.immitis microfilaria in heartworm-positive dogs, Midamox for Dogs should be administered at one-month intervals. Treatment with an approved adulticide therapy is recommended because Midamox for Dogs is not effective for the treatment of adult D.immitis.
Treatment and Control of Intestinal Nematode Infections: For the treatment and control of intestinal hookworm infections caused by Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala (adults, immature adults and fourth stage larvae) and roundworm infections caused by Toxocara canis (adults and fourth stage larvae), and Toxascaris leonina (adults), and whip worm infections caused by Trichuris vulpis (adults), Midamox for Dogs should be administered once as a single topical dose.
Treatment and Control of Sarcoptic Mange: For the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis, Midamox for Dogs should be administered as a single topical dose. A second monthly dose may be administered if necessary.
