Description

Metacam is a FDA Approved non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory prescription medication used to help pets who suffer from a degenerative or inflammatory joint condition, such as arthritis. It helps alleviate pain, allowing your pet to live a happier and healthier life. NSAIDs such as Metacam improve your dog's overall mobility by relieving joint pain and inflammation. This prescription medication comes in an oral suspension form, so you can easily give it to your pet by using the syringe provided. Best of all, you can even disguise it in your pal's favorite wet food. Metacam is available in two different strengths (0.5 mg/ml and 1.5 mg/ml) to fit the needs of dogs of all sizes over the age of 6 months.

Uses

METACAM (meloxicam oral suspension) is a veterinary prescription non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helps control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs 6 months and older. Do not use on Cats. Similar to human osteoarthritis (OA), canine OA is a condition in which one or more joints become inflamed and painful and may even be swollen.

Possible Side Effects

The safe use of METACAM (meloxicam oral suspension) in dogs younger than 6 months of age, dogs used for breeding, or in pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. With your veterinarian, carefully consider the potential benefits and risk of METACAM and other treatment options before deciding to use METACAM. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual response. Warnings: Not for use in humans. Keep this and all medications out of reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans. For oral use in dogs only. Contraindication: Dogs with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam should not receive Metacam Oral Suspension. Do not use Metacam Oral Suspension in cats. Acute renal failure and death have been associated with the use of meloxicam in cats.

Directions

View Metacam Drug Facts Sheet.

Always provide client information sheet with a prescription. Carefully consider the potential benefits and risk of Metacam and other treatment options before deciding to use Metacam. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual response. Metacam Oral Suspension should be administered initially at 0.09 mg/lb (0.2 mg/kg) body weight only on the first day of treatment. For all treatments after day 1, Metacam Oral Suspension should be administered once daily at a dose of 0.045 mg/lb (0.1 mg/kg). The syringe is calibrated to deliver the daily maintenance dose in pounds.

Dogs under 10 pounds (4.5 kg)

Shake well before use, then remove the cap. Particular care should be given about the accuracy of dosing. To prevent accidental overdosing of small dogs, administer drops on food only, never directly into the mouth. Carefully measure suspension onto food to assure that the correct dose is given before the presentation of the food to the dog. The syringe provided with the meloxicam concentration of 1.5 mg/mL cannot be used to measure doses for dogs weighing less than 5 lbs (2.3 kg).

For dogs less than 5 lbs (2.3 kg), Metacam Oral Suspension can be given using the dropper bottle: one drop for each pound of body weight for the 1.5 mg/mL concentration (two drops for each kilogram of body weight), dropped directly onto the food.

For dogs between 5-10 pounds, Metacam Oral Suspension can be given by drops or by using the measuring syringe provided in the package (see dosing procedure below). The syringe fits on to the bottle and has a scale beginning at 5 lbs, designed to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/lb or 0.1 mg/kg). When using the syringe, the dog’s weight should be rounded down to the nearest 5 pound increment. Replace and tighten cap after use.

Dogs over 10 pounds (4.5 kg)

Shake well before use then remove the cap. Metacam Oral Suspension may be either mixed with food or placed directly into the mouth. Particular care should be given about the accuracy of dosing. Metacam Oral Suspension can be given using the measuring syringe provided in the package (see dosing procedure below). The syringe fits on to the bottle and has a scale in pounds designed to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/lb or 0.1 mg/kg). When using the syringe, the dog’s weight should be rounded down to the nearest 5-pound increment. Alternatively, Metacam Oral Suspension can be given using the dropper bottle: one drop for each pound of body weight for the 1.5 mg/mL concentration (two drops for each kilogram of body weight). Replace and tighten cap after use.

Dogs under 10 pounds (4.5 kg)

To prevent accidental overdosing of small dogs, administer drops on food only, never directly into the mouth. Carefully measure suspension onto food to assure that the correct dose is given before the presentation of the food to the dog. The syringe provided with the meloxicam concentration of 0.5 mg/mL cannot be used to measure doses for dogs weighing less than 1 lb (0.45 kg).

For dogs less than 1 lb (0.45 kg), Metacam Oral Suspension can be given using the dropper bottle: two drops for each pound of body weight for the 0.5 mg/mL concentration (five drops for each kilogram of body weight), dropped directly onto the food.

For dogs between 1-10 pounds, Metacam Oral Suspension can be given by drops or by using the measuring syringe provided in the package (see dosing procedure below). The syringe fits on to the bottle and has a scale beginning at 1 lb, designed to deliver the daily maintenance dose (0.05 mg/lb or 0.1 mg/kg). When using the syringe, the dog’s weight should be rounded down to the nearest 1 pound increment. Replace and tighten cap after use.

Store at controlled room temperature, 68-77°F (20-25°C). Keep away from children and pets. Excursions permitted between 59° and 86°F (15° and 30°C). Brief exposure to temperatures up to 104°F (40°C) may be tolerated provided the mean kinetic temperature does not exceed 77°F (25°C); however, such exposure should be minimized.

Dogs with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam should not receive Metacam Oral Suspension.

Do not use Metacam Oral Suspension in cats. Acute renal failure and death have been associated with the use of meloxicam in cats.

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all medications out of reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental ingestion by humans. For oral use in dogs only.

As with any NSAID all dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before the initiation of NSAID therapy. Appropriate laboratory testing to establish hematological and serum biochemical baseline data is recommended prior to and periodically during administration. The owner should be advised to observe their dog for signs of potential drug toxicity and be given a client information sheet about Metacam.

Contact the veterinarian if the pet has bloody, black or tarry stools, blood in vomit, swelling or rapid weight gain due to fluid retention, unusual fatigue or weakness, yellowing of the eyes, excessive itching, abdominal pain or tenderness as these symptoms could indicate serious side effects. If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Metacam and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips; tongue or face; hives); muscle cramps, open sores in the mouth, seizures, abdominal cramping. Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue giving Metacam and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation, depression, fatigue or weakness, dry mouth. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

FAQ

Your veterinarian will recommend a treatment plan and may suggest that your dog try Metacam for a specific period of time. Your veterinarian may ask you to report back or return with your dog for a follow-up evaluation to determine if treatment should continue. Just like people who have osteoarthritis, your dog will likely have to live with this condition for the rest of his life. You can feel comfortable giving Metacam knowing that it has been safely used to treat dogs with osteoarthritis around the world for over 20 years.
Metacam targets and relieves both the pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis. Relief from arthritis pain can help restore mobility, allowing your dog to return to many of the activities that you both previously enjoyed. Best of all, it can be given once daily, which provides a full 24 hours of relief.
Aspirin is a drug that is not approved for use in animals. Aspirin should not be given during Metacam therapy. Also, Metacam should not be given with other anti-inflammatory drugs such as cortisone, Rimadyl (carprofen), ibuprofen, Previcox (firocoxib), or Deramaxx (deracoxib). Be sure to tell your veterinarian about any other medications your dog is taking before beginning treatment with Metacam.
Metacam therapy is one of a number of things that may help relieve your dog’s osteoarthritis pain. Your veterinarian may suggest a weight loss program or exercise regimen. Talk to your veterinarian before starting your dog on any weight loss or exercise plan. You can also help to make your dog as comfortable as possible by providing a soft place to sleep and keeping him or her warm. Performing massage and physical therapy on your dog as directed by your veterinarian can relieve joint stiffness and increase range of motion. In addition, raising food and water bowls to avoid neck strain, installing ramps to avoid your dog having to use stairs, putting non-skid runners on slippery surfaces, and other such supportive measures can help make daily activities less painful.
Just as many children's medicines come in liquid rather than pill form, liquid Metacam is designed to make it easier to administer the right dose to dogs. Metacam Oral Suspension is made in a smooth liquid form so that dog owners can dispense it easily from the syringe. Because it's liquid, it is easy to adjust the dose in small increments using the measuring syringe, with a precision unavailable from a rigid tablet. It is easily applied to the dog's food or given directly into the dog's mouth. Moreover, liquid Metacam is readily absorbed by dogs. And, dogs love the sweet honey-flavored taste. Metacam, the first NSAID available as an oral suspension, offers a highly convenient treatment option to dog owners and allows for accurate dosing for any size dog—something that chewable tablets cannot always achieve.
Even small-breed dogs get osteoarthritis. That's why a special low-concentration Metacam Oral Suspension for small dogs was developed.
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of Metacam overdose include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of consciousness, drowsiness, headache, cardiac arrest, stomach pain, seizures, little or no urine production, and slow breathing
Many over a counter cough, cold, allergy and pain medicines contain aspirin or other NSAID's similar to Metacam. Before taking any prescription or over the counter medications talk to the veterinarian or pharmacist.

Problems getting around? This is the answer!
March 28, 2020
I have had this prescribed by 2 different vets for 2 different cats. One was 21 years old when I started him on it, and his hips were just giving out. He would just yell out loudly as his back end went down to one side or the other. After taking this, he would walk around without having to cry out. I was amazed. The 2nd cat was a rescue who has FIV. After I got him well and worked with him so that he wouldn't bite me when I tried to pet him, I was able to get him to the vet on another problem he had. He really had a bad problem with his back end, but it wasn't like my 22yo cat. When the vet took an xray of his back, he saw that he has a very big bone spur that is almost poking through his muscle and skin. Because he has FIV, the doctor said he may have severe issues if he had an operation to fix it. He put him on Metacam, and wow what a difference! I don't know the actual age of this cat, the vet oeabout 5yo. Ever since taking this Metacam; he comes out to visit me quite often, bats at different toys that are on the floor (he doesn't go running after them, though) and does general inspections of the house as he just walks around. When I take him off of it for the week, you can tell the difference. So Metacam has helped both an old cat who had hip problems, and a young cat who has a bone spur that could ding a hole in a bank vault door.
Cons
  • I have to use the syringe that came with it to take out a little, then take a much smaller syringe that will insert into it to get the dosage down to a small amount at an actual level. It's meant for dogs (usually big ones that have a hip problem), so getting a small dosage can be a challenge.

good service
September 14, 2018
My dog has been using Metacam on and off for a long time, so I know the product is good.

What I'm actually reviewing is the Entirely Pets service, which was great. They kept me informed of the status of my order and followed my instructions about getting the Rx from my vet.

They also sent a product that won't expire before we use it. I've had other online pharmacies send me items that only had 6 mos. or less before expiration, wasting my money.

The price was also terrific.

So, I'll be getting refills from EP when needed!

Merchant Response:Hello Bee, I%u2019m glad to hear that your dog has found success with Metacam. Also, you are making us blush about our service. We try our best and are glad to have you as a customer.

Good Arthritis Pain Relief For My Dog.
September 5, 2018
My 12 lb/12 year old poodle has been on this daily for about four years. She has a horrible skeletal makeup and was limping horribly before getting on Metacam as prescribed by a vet. It worked within a couple of days and she's walked more normally ever since. I know the improvement is from Metacam because if I forget to give it for a day or two, she'll start to limp again. Every dog is different but from my experience, Metacam has been an amazing success for us.
Pros
  • It works for my dog. Simple as that. There have been no negative effects from it whatsoever.

Very Happy Dog
April 10, 2017
I have 10 year old Yorkie mix who had to have one of her hip joints removed when she was just a young pup do to Legg Calve Perethes disease. Because she is a small dog, she was able to walk just fine as the ligaments and muscles took over for the lack of the hip joint. She has always had a very slight limp though that was barely noticeable. 10 yearslater though the lack of hip on the one side has put more wear on the other hip and she suffered from occasional arthritis pain. This medication takes care of the pain quickly and she never fusses about taking it, unlike other pill pain Meds. It's so easy to despense the medication into her mouth and she laps it right up. After a short nap, she is feeling good again.
Pros
  • Easy to dispense using syring. Must taste good because my log laps it right up when I put in her mouth.
Cons
  • A little pricey

Arthritis relief for dogs
April 24, 2016
Our vet recommended this for our 11 year old Pomeranian. We checked around and found a much better price for twice the amount that we could get it for at the vet's office, so we ordered it from Entirely Pets Pharmacy. They were very helpful since the vet didn't want to OK the prescription over the phone or by fax, we had to go and pick up a written copy and mail it to them. They knew we were in a hurry since we were almost out of the small bottle from the vet and they did everything to get in in the mail fast and get it to us.
Pros
  • This product has our dog running around again. It seems to feel much better. He was just like us, he would sit down or lay down for a while and get up and be stiff and not move around as fast. He is taking this and doesn't have that problem anymore.
