Leukeran is the brand name product for chlorambucil which is a medication used in certain cancers and other conditions in pets. The most common side effects associated with Leukeran include blood abnormalities, immune abnormalities, and stomach upset/damage. In dogs, Leukeran can also cause shaven fur to grow back much slower. It is important to note how Leukeran depresses your pet's immune system, so it is essential to keep your pet at low risk of any other infection or illness while they are taking Leukeran. Chlorambucil is a chemotherapy drug that stops the growth of certain cancer cells and suppresses antibodies by forming a bond with nucleic acid, thus making it difficult for DNA to divide and replicate.
LEUKERAN (chlorambucil) is indicated in the treatment of chronic lymphatic (lymphocytic) 56 leukemia, malignant lymphomas including lymphosarcoma, giant follicular lymphoma, and 57 Hodgkin's disease. It is not curative in any of these disorders but may produce clinically useful 58 palliation.

Wear gloves when handling this medication. Avoid contact with your pet's urine, feces and saliva for 48 hours after each dose. It is recommended that you wash your hands after administering this medication. Give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY. Try to give this medication at about the same time(s) each day. DO NOT give the pet more medicine than directed. DO NOT give the medicine more often than directed. DO NOT stop giving this medication unless directed by your veterinarian. Try not to miss giving any doses.
Your veterinarian will likely monitor your pet's blood levels regularly to check for bone marrow suppression, which may result in anemia or bleeding disorders. These symptoms may appear one to two weeks after initiating therapy. Contact your veterinarian if you notice bruising, bleeding, excessive tiredness, infection, depression or difficulty breathing. Some dogs may lose their hair after treatment. Since chlorambucil can increase your pet's chance of getting an infection, try to keep your pet away from stray animals or animals that may have an infection. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
This medication should not be used in pets whose disease has demonstrated a prior resistance to the agent. Pets who have demonstrated hypersensitivity to this medication should not be given the drug. There may be cross-hypersensitivity between Leukeran and other agents.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
Store in refrigerator at temperatures between 36° - 46°F. Dispense in tight container as defined in the USP.
