Doxepin HCl is a medication prescribed to help treat depression or anxiety. It comes in an easy-to-administer capsule and may help improve quality of life. Customers may receive this drug under the names Sinequan, Silenor.
Doxepin is indicated as adjunctive therapy of psychogenic dermatoses (any skin irritation or lesion that is self-inflicted), particularly those that are caused by anxiety.
Doxepin has less potential for adverse cardiac effects than many other tricyclics, but instances of ventricular arrhythmias have been reported, particularly after overdoses. It may also cause extreme excitability, gastrointestinal distress, or lethargy. Other side effects are possible. Contact your vet at once you notice any adverse reactions or strange behaviors after starting Doxepin.
Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your vet. Do not stop administering this medication or change dosage without explicit instructions from a professional.
Side effects include low blood pressure, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, constipation, dry mouth, and blue-green urine. Doxepin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug, glaucoma or problems associated with urinary retention. Use with caution in seizure-prone animals.
Notify your veterinarian of other medications that your pet is taking. Drug interactions occur with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, thyroid medications, atropine sedatives, antihistamines, norepinephrine and phenytoin. The following drugs may increase the effects of doxepin: cimetidine (Tagamet) estrogens fluoxetine (Prozac) some sedatives enalapril verapamil and ranitidine (Zantac).
Use of Doxepin has resulted in some side effects. Side effects include: excitability, GI upset or tiredness. If you notice any of these side effects stop use, and contact your veterinarian immediately.
Using flea/tick collars while giving Doxepin can result in toxicity and possibly death. Make sure you discuss all possible side effects that could be caused by other medications your pet is taking with your veterinarian.
Store at temperatures between 68° - 77°F.
