Diclofenac is a topical analgesic approved by the FDA to treat joint pain and inflammation in horses. It should help your animal feel better within one to two hours, and is approved to be used for up to ten days. Wearing disposable non-permeable gloves, you apply the gel by rubbing it thoroughly into the hair covering the affected joint. Your veterinarian will probably suggest that you don’t use diclofenac on more than one joint at one time, or spread it over an area larger than a five-inch ribbon, because side effects could occur.
Diclofenac sodium, the active ingredient, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce inflammation which in turn reduces pain.
Diclofenac sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indicated for the relief of the pain of osteoarthritis of jointsamenable to topical treatment, such as the knees and those of the hands. Diclofenac sodium topical gel was not evaluated for use on joints of the spine, hip, or shoulder.
Apply to skin over the affected area four times daily. Use the dosing card provided to measure the amount of diclofenac sodium topical gel to be applied. See accompanying prescribing information.
This drug is not a hand cream and gloves should be worn during application. Package directions and veterinarian instructions pertaining to the amount applied should be followed carefully.
When used according to directions, side effects seldom occur. Some horses may develop skin problems if the cream and environmental dirt is allowed to build up over the treated area. This problem can be avoided by regular washing with mild shampoo.
Exceeding the recommended dosage or treating multiple joints may cause adverse effects.
Store at 68°F to 77°F; excursions permitted between 59°F to 86°F. Keep from freezing.
