Description

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic and this product contains the medication in an easy to use suspension to give to your pet by mouth. This medication is fruit punch flavored and while it is labeled for humans, is regularly prescribed for pets.

How it works

Clarithromycin is known as a macrolide antibiotic. Clarithromycin fights bacterial infections in the body. Clarithromycin works by stopping the bacterial growth by inhibiting synthesis of essential proteins, which are required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Indication & Usage

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antimicrobial indicated for mild to moderate infections caused by designated, susceptible bacteria in the following:

  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis in Adults
  • Acute Maxillary Sinusitis
  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia
  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Acute Otitis Media in Pediatric Patients
  • Treatment and Prophylaxis of Disseminated Mycobacterial Infections
  • Helicobacter pylori Infection and Duodenal Ulcer Disease in Adults

To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of clarithromycin and other antibacterial drugs, clarithromycin should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.

FAQ

Store at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Protect from light. Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom. Throw away any part not used after 2 weeks. Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets. Throw away unused or expired drugs. Do not flush down a toilet or pour down a drain unless you are told to do so. Check with your pharmacist if you have questions about the best way to throw out drugs. There may be drug take-back programs in your area.
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
Clarithromycin appears to be well tolerated in pets, but it may cause some stomach upset. Giving clarithromycin with food may help alleviate some of the stomach side effects. A rare side effect of clarithromycin in cats is inner ear redness.
The suspension will arrive as a powder that will need water added to it and a thorough shaking. VetRxDirect will provide a syringe with a marker on it with which you can measure the needed water. Shake vigorously immediately after adding the water and every time you are going to give your pet a dose. Clarithromycin interacts with many medications, including cisapride, antacids, other antibiotics, NSAIDs, ACE Inhibitors, Cyclosporine, spironolactone, potassium, and many other drugs.
