Amoxicillin is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins, which work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Amoxicillin is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including skin infections, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and other infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is available in different formulations, including tablets, capsules, and oral suspension, and should be used as directed by a veterinarian. Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the disruption of the bacterial cell structure and ultimately causing cell death. Bacteria need cell walls to protect themselves from their environment and to maintain their shape. By inhibiting cell wall synthesis, Amoxicillin effectively kills the bacteria, helping to resolve the infection. Amoxicillin is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, making it a versatile antibiotic for treating bacterial infections in dogs and cats.
Dogs: Amoxi-Tabs are indicated in the treatment of susceptible strains of the organisms causing the following infections: Respiratory tract infections (tonsillitis, tracheobronchitis) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis. Genitourinary tract infections (cystitis) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis. Gastrointestinal tract infections (bacterial gastroenteritis) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis. Bacterial dermatitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Proteus mirabilis. Soft tissue infections (abscesses, lacerations, and wounds) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis.
Cats: Amoxi-Tabs are indicated in the treatment of susceptible strains of the organisms causing the following infections: Upper respiratory tract infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and E. coli. Genitourinary tract infections (cystitis) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Proteus mirabilis. Gastrointestinal tract infections due to E. coli. Skin and soft tissue infections (abscesses, lacerations, and wounds) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., E. coli, and Pasteurella multocida.
As with all antibiotics, appropriate in vitro culturing and susceptibility testing of samples taken before treatment should be conducted.
Tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given another antibiotic. Also tell your veterinarian if your pet has allergies, or kidney, stomach or intestinal disease. While symptoms may subside early, use all of the prescribed medicine.
This antibiotic for dogs and cats should only be used in cases that are proven to be bacterial infections. It should not be used in animals that are hypersensitive to penicillin and on animals reared for meat as amoxicillin is protein binding in nature. Amoxicillin tablets are contraindicative with certain medications such as Allopurinol and Erythromycin. Capsules are slow dissolving hence it might take some time for the pet to show palpable signs of improvement.
Amoxicillin capsules might set off insulin allergic reactions in some animals, which might have symptoms like rashes, fever, swelling of face or limbs, labored breathing, rapid heartbeat, and imbalance. Over dosage might result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain while abnormally high doses can result in acute oliguric renal failure or hematuria. Other side effects when using amoxicillin include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which require urgent medical aid.
Should be stored at room temperature.
